    Opening of the Programme of Vilnius - European Capital of Culture 2009
    In 2009, Vilnius will become the European Capital of Culture and Lithuania is going to celebrate the millennium of its name. On this special occasion an impressive festive programme of different cultural event is waiting for residents and guests of Vilnius holiday on the New Year’s Eve.

    Every weekend in January will offer ice-skating art programmes and ice theatre performances. Throughout January the skating rink will be open for visitors. Everyone will have the opportunity to rent skating inventory and enjoy turns on ice in the heart of the City of Vilnius.

    ARTscape
    This Project introduces the most unique contemporary visual art, jazz and cinema representatives of twelve European Capitals of Culture in Vilnius, presenting their works together with twelve most outstanding representatives of the same spheres in Lithuania.

    Vilnius Book Fair
    The biggest book fair in the Baltic countries and one of the main Lithuanian culture events, the Vilnius Book Fair will celebrate its 10-year anniversary as Vilnius becomes the European capital of culture in 2009.

    Vilnius reads Linz
    The event series “Vilnius reads Linz” at anniversary Vilnius Book Fair is analogous to the project “Linz reads Vilnius”, which will take place in Linz. Vilnius citizens and guests will have the opportunity to explore the literature of the City of Linz, which also received the title of European Capital of Culture.

    CAPITAL TO CAPITAL
    This project is aimed at organising the cycle of joint concerts of Norwegian and Lithuania performer groups in 2008 in Stavanger and in 2009 – in Vilnius. These concerts would be as passing on the “baton” of the European Capitals of Culture between Stavanger and Vilnius.

    Culture Night Let There Be Night!
    The new cultural tradition of Vilnius launched in 2007 came from European capitals. Vilnius squares transform into dance schools under the open sky, parks – into cinemas on the grass, rivers are decorated with installations and glimmering labyrinths, churches perform night classical, rock and organ concerts, narrow streets host performances, love songs are sung from balconies, hand-made torches illuminate, poetry is read, and lullabies are sang. Museums attract with musical performances and animation. One in five Vilnius residents attends this event.

    G. Verdi REQUIEM with WORLD FESTIVAL CHOIR
    More than 300 singers from USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Scandinavian countries, Germany, and Switzerland will come to Vilnius together with Kaunas State Choir and Vilnius Choir will form the joint choir “World Festival Choir”.

    Water Music of Capital City
    The idea of this international music project is to join the spaces of two capitals of culture – Vilnius and Linz through joint concerts of “Water Music of Capital City”.

    The Moscow Bolshoi Theatre Tour, play “Korsar”
    The Moscow Bolshoi Theatre is the world’s most renowned ballet theatre. After more than 10 years of silence, “Korsar”, one of the most beautiful classical ballets, returned to the repertoire of the Bolshoi Theatre. The ballet swirls with the original A. Adam score and features additional musical interpretations by six different composers. A. Ratmansky, the choreographer, together with Y. Burlaka created a new choreography for the play.

    Twilights - Ruhrlights
    Duisburg of Ruhr Area in Germany has united its efforts with two other cities – Mulheime and Oberhauzen – to realise the idea of artistic light shows and water. The project was launched in 2008 in Mulheime-on-Ruhr.
